With the kids mid-term looming around the corner and the weather being it’s usual cold crappy miserable self. I’m going to list the top 10 Halloween movies for kids. I have asked my own children what their favourites are and of course as they are all different age groups therefore they are from all different genres you should note that some of these movies may not be suitable if you have a younger child.
Hocus Pocus (1993)
Follow skeptic teenager Max, his sister Danni and new love interest Allison__________ after accidentaly bringing three Witches back from the dead. The Sanderson Sisters – Winnie, Mary and Sara try to work against the clock to steal the souls of the unsuspecting children of Salem, whilst being foiled at every turn by the plucky teenagers who enlist the help of their new friend, a talking cat named Binks. Unsurprisingly this was on ALL of the kids lists. Mine too, I love Hocus Pocus. We watch this movie on Halloween, every year, it is suitable for the whole family and it has become a bit of a tradition in our family.
Coraline is an eleven year old feisty young girl who enters through a secret door to uncover a parralell universe. The movie is pretty creepy but and maybe one or two that are a bit over the top for a younger child, but i sat and watched it with mine and they were absoultley fine. Not one of my favourites but my daughter had this on her list and seems to quite enjoy it
Spooky Buddies (2011)
I’m a Huge fan of all the Buddies movies, and everything that is Disney actually, and so are my kids. Well, the older 2 are too cool nowadays to be watching the Buddies, so they
pretend to have no interest in this one. In this one the puppies embark on a spooky adventure through a haunted mansion and although there were a few spooky moments in there it wasn’t over the top scary. My kids love watching it especially the 4 and 7 year old. It had them giggling the whole way through, this will be another to add to the Halloween tradition list.
I remember watching this movie in the cinema with my dad when i was around 9 years old and i still go back to it even now. It’s funny, exciting and sad all in one movie. I have even passed the love of Casper down to my own children. The boys are huge fans of the three mischievious uncles – Stretch, Fatso and Stinkie and i love the comedy that the three of them bring to the movie. I revisit this movie every year around Halloween and the kids love it.
Monster House (2006)
Almost every neighbourhood or town has that house that is considered to be haunted especially in the mind of a ten year old! This movie focuses on that fear and follows three teenagers who discover that their neighbours house is really a living breathing scary monster. It does have quite a dark theme to it and again would be more aimed at the older child, my 9 and 12 year old really enjoyed it.
Pooh’s Heffalump Halloween Movie (2005)
It’s Halloween in the Hundred Acre Woods and Roo and his new friend Lumpy are excited to go trick or treating. That is until Tigger warns them of the Gobloon that wants to catch them and turn them into a jaggedy lantern! Roo and Lumpy decide to brave and catch the Gobloon before it catches them. This movie is great for all the family even the baby loves watching it as they loved the Heffalump movie.
This was picked by my 12 year old son and he’s really into these kinds of movies. A team of ghostbusting scientists must save New York City from an evil creature. I should add that i would not allow my 4 or even 7 year old to watch this movie, there are some bits in it that would scare the bejaysus out of them, but the 12 and 9 year old love it.
A family move into a house that is occupied by a ghost family, who are not too happy to in turn hire Beetlejuice to terrify the new owners out. the Again it was my 12 year old son who selected this one. However, again i don’t think this movie would be suitable for younger children as i think there are parts in this movie that would terrify a younger child. It is a good movie however for the older child or teenager. Or adult, because i love Beetlejuice too!
The Addams Family (1991)
This movie is based on the popular tv programme. When long lost uncle Fester returns, Morticia, Gomez, Wednesday, Pugsley and Lurch try to distinguish if Uncle Fester is indeed who he claims to be. As weird and wild as the family seem to be what i love about it is that the Addams Family is quite a loving family orientated family who just happen to be a bit different. It’s a hilariously funny film and one that my family will be enjoying for years to come.
So there’s our favourite Halloween movies. What are your family favourites to watch at Halloween? Leave a comment and let me know…
